Ballet in One Act

The internationally acclaimed and award‑winning Slovenian choreographer Edward Clug’s ballet Carmina Burana is based on Carl Orff’s legendary oratorio of the same name — a powerful reflection on the twists and turns of human existence, governed by the whims of fortune. The central symbol of the oratorio, the Wheel of Fortune, turns ceaselessly, transforming joy into bitterness and hope into mourning.

In Edward Clug’s choreography, the principal visual motif is the circle — the simplest and at the same time the most complete natural form. The world premiere of Carmina Burana took place in October 2019 in Canada, performed by Les Grands Ballets Canadiens.

The production unites the Latvian National Ballet, the orchestra and choir of the Latvian National Opera, as well as opera soloists, creating a monumental artistic whole of great musical and visual impact.

World premiere of the ballet: Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, 3 October 2019
Premiere at the Latvian National Opera: 5 November 2022
