“The current situation in the world might be a good moment to start drinking.”
Kaja Kallas, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs

One night, one apartment building, and fourteen people who, by sheer coincidence, have gotten completely drunk that evening. Their souls are filled with confusion, tenderness, bafflement and love. The characters try to draw closer to a truth that, when drunk, suddenly seems within reach, but once sobriety returns, slips back into the distance.

Drunks is a witty and poetic tragicomedy that plunges the audience into the various parties and gatherings of the nocturnal city. Intoxication makes the characters at once comically clumsy and extraordinarily lucid. For a fleeting moment, nameless confusion and longing let loose words that are reluctant to emerge in the light of day.

Drunks is simultaneously funny and sad, philosophical and mundane, full of poetry and unnaturally sincere. Just like life itself.

Russian playwright Ivan Vyrypaev is currently one of the world’s most renowned and frequently performed contemporary authors. However, this is not the case in Russia, due to his criticism of imperial policies and his outspoken support for Ukraine. Ivan Vyrypaev left Russia in 2014.

“To be honest, the last time I was this drunk was at my university graduation party.”
Karl, a character in Drunks, banker
