An Evening of Jevgeni Grib’s Ballets

Keep a Light in the Window

In a city stands a tall building whose façade is modest by day and mysteriously alive at night. In the evening, as darkness spills into the streets, the lights in the building begin to switch on one by one. From some rooms laughter can be heard; in others someone holds their breath; in some, people say their farewells, while in others they wait for new beginnings. Each apartment is a small universe with its own story. The ballet invites the viewer to travel through these points of light: to witness love that has unexpectedly blossomed; silence that can be either comforting or painfully heavy; moments of solitude in a crowded city; and the fleeting instant when even the smallest glance or touch can alter the course of an entire life.

It is important that every window holds light. Sometimes it is enough for someone to switch the light back on.

In 2019, Jevgeni Grib received the Estonian Theatre Union’s Ballet Award for The Light in the Window.

Tango

What happens when a man and a woman meet, having lived until now as if on different planets? Perhaps it resembles the first breath of a tango? To come close is at once irresistible and perilous, for these opposing forces must first learn to navigate one another. The man’s curved line and the woman’s sharp arc are drawn toward one another, yet still maintain a charged distance that makes every step unpredictable. It is precisely in this field of tension that their mysterious dance is born: a pull that will not allow separation, and a secret that will not allow true closeness. Can their rhythm become one?
