Season Opening Concert of the Vanemuine Symphony Orchestra

August 30th 2024 at the Vanemuine Concert Hall

August 31st 2024 at the Pärnu Concert Hall

Program:

Gustav Mahler, Symphony No. 8, E-flat major

PROGRAM

Gustav Mahler’s 8th Symphony is one of the largest-scale choral works in the classical concert repertoire and is therefore also called the “Symphony of a Thousand”. Symphony No. 8 is the last of Mahler’s works which premiered in his lifetime, conducted by the composer himself. The first part of the work uses the 9th century Christian hymn “Veni creator spiritus”, the second part is composed to the words of the final scene of “Faust” by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.

The 2024 Season Opening Concert of the Vanemuine Symphony Orchestra brings before the audience eight powerful soloists from Estonia and abroad, as well as the orchestra, mixed choirs and boys’ choir. Over the years, many of the soloists have been guest performers on the Vanemuine theatre opera stage.

Concert is a part of the European Capital of Culture Tartu 2024 main programme.
