The Small Building of Vanemuine Theatre

The performance ends. The audience applauds and leaves, each carrying their own emotions. The set is struck, the lights go out. Five actors remain. They remove their make-up, change their costumes, and prepare to leave – but find they cannot. Suddenly, the world outside vanishes; only the theatre remains.

These actors, who have spent years together on stage, know surprisingly little about one another. Without a text, a director, or assigned roles, even speaking becomes a struggle. Yet silence offers no refuge.

Gradually, and against their will, they begin to communicate through the scenes they once performed. Long-buried thoughts and feelings surface, alongside beautiful memories and hidden doubts. Soon they discover they are not entirely alone: the building itself, rich with history, begins to speak to them, drawing out forgotten moments of joy and sorrow. And stranger still, though the auditorium seats are empty, the sense of being watched remains.

The situation spirals – absurd and existential, frightening and funny, shifting from farce to sudden tragedy. Such is the inevitability of theatre: to play with every emotion from tears to Homeric laughter in pursuit of the unattainable – the miracle of catharsis.

What happens to a person who has spent their life playing others? Where does the role end and the self begin? And what remains when there is nothing left to lean on?
