A classic of American drama, Eugene O’Neill’s 1922 expressionist play explores the collapse of class consciousness and identity. The protagonist, Yank, is a stoker on a transatlantic liner, fueled by an absolute confidence in his own primal superiority. This certainty shatters during a brief encounter with Mildred, the daughter of a wealthy industrialist. Driven by a misplaced moral obligation to see how the poor live, she is overwhelmed by the horror of what she witnesses and faints. This moment upends Yank’s world as well, sending him into a free fall through the impenetrable machinery of class society and capitalism and toward a profound identity crisis. Is he still a human being – or merely a hairy ape?
The middle class is fading, the working class is suffocating, and wealth is flowing ever faster into the pockets of a tiny ultra-rich elite. Technologies that until recently required human labour – promising an easier, more abundant life – now serve a far more ominous purpose. In this crumbling world order, only the rigid identity of the individual offers a semblance of stability. One must cling to one’s role at any cost, fighting fiercely against the world; here, every compromise risks a slide into insignificance, and every acceptance is a step toward total resignation.
