Molière’s legendary The Miser brings to the stage comic situations that have made audiences laugh since 1668 and continue to do so today. From a tangle of greed, love, and intrigue emerges a brisk and elegant comedy in which every character is fighting for something – or against someone.

At the heart of the story is Harpagon, a man whose heart is as hard as the gold coins clinking at the bottom of his strongbox. He loves only one thing – his wealth – and is willing to sacrifice even his children’s happiness and his own dignity to nail the lid of his treasure chest shut even tighter. But since this is a comedy, fate rarely bows to Harpagon’s wishes…

Director Priit Strandberg:
“All global problems are ultimately connected to human weaknesses or someone’s sick ambitions – from wars to climate catastrophe. There is no such thing as political inevitability, only self-centred decisions. This is why Molière’s plays speak so powerfully today. A sharp-eyed observer of society, Molière ridicules the universal vices that steer our planet toward its most destructive ends. Thus, the greed Molière places under the magnifying glass – along with the egocentrism and profiteering that follow –  becomes a force that erodes the human soul and, eventually, society itself. Particularly when material avarice gives way to a much deeper greed – one that starves both love and compassion.”
