Läti Rahvusooper ja -ballet ning Rahvusteater Vanemuine vahetavad maju

Täna, 21. jaanuaril kell 15.30 toimus Rahvusteater Vanemuine suure maja fuajees pressikonverents, kus tutvustati 2026. aasta augustis aset leidvat Vanemuise ja Läti Rahvusooperi suurt külalisetenduste vahetust Tartus ja Riias.

Tegemist on kahe suure teatri vastastikuse visiidiga, mis jätkab pikaajalist Eesti–Läti teatrikoostööd.

Augustis saab Tartus Rahvusteater Vanemuine laval näha Läti Rahvusooperi -ja balleti kaht külalisetendust: Gaetano Donizetti ooperit „Armujook“ ja Carl Orffi balletti „Carmina Burana“ (koreograaf Edward Clug).

Riias astub Rahvusteater Vanemuine Läti publiku ette kolme žanriga, avades oma külalisetendused Arvo Pärdile pühendatud žanriülese lavastusega „Palve. Kummardus Arvo Pärdile“, mis on telekanali Mezzo vahendusel jõudnud juba sadade tuhandete vaatajateni üle maailma. Sellele järgneb Georg Friedrich Händeli barokkooper „Julius Caesar“, kus astuvad üles kolm Eesti kontratenorit – mõlema etenduse dirigent on Vanemuise muusikajuht Risto Joost. Draamalavastus „Lõpp“ (lavastaja Läti juurtega Marta Aliide Jakovski) etendub Dailes teatri äsja valminud väiksemas saalis.

Teatrijuhi Aivar Mäe sõnul on see koostöö tõeline kultuurisild Eesti ja Läti vahel: „Sellel sillal käib liiklus mõlemas suunas. Toome Tartusse Läti Rahvusooperi külalisetendused ning viime Vanemuise kolm žanrit Riiga: balleti, ooperi ja draama. Kahe linna vaheline rongiühendus teeb selle sillal käimise sõna otseses mõttes lihtsaks – publik saab tulla ja minna, avastada naabrite teatrit ning kogeda tipplavastusi siin ja sealpool piiri.“

Pressikonverentsil osalesid Läti Rahvusooperi ja -balleti peadirektor Sandis Voldiņš, Rahvusteater Vanemuine teatrijuht Aivar Mäe, muusikajuht Risto Joost, balletijuht Jevgeni Grib ja draamajuht Tanel Jonas. Muusikalise etteaste tegi Pirjo Jonas ooperist „Julius Caesar“ ning balletiartistid Selma Strandberg ja Vladyslav Kalys esitasid numbri lavastusest „Palve. Kummardus Arvo Pärdile“.

Today, on 21 January at 3:30 p.m., a Press conference was held in the foyer of the Grand Building of Estonian National Theatre Vanemuine, where a major guest performance exchange between Vanemuine Theatre and the Latvian National Opera and Ballet, to take place in August 2026 in Tartu and Riga, was introduced.

This is a mutual visit by two major theatres, continuing the long-standing theatrical cooperation between Estonia and Latvia.

In August, audiences in Tartu will be able to see two guest performances by the Latvian National Opera and Ballet on the stage of Vanemuine Theatre: Gaetano Donizetti’s opera L’elisir d’amore and Carl Orff’s ballet Carmina Burana (choreography by Edward Clug).

In Riga, Vanemuine Theatre will present itself to Latvian audiences across three genres. The guest performances will open with the genre-crossing production A Little Prayer. Tribute to Arvo Pärt, dedicated to composer Arvo Pärt, which has already reached hundreds of thousands of viewers worldwide via the television channel Mezzo. This will be followed by Georg Friedrich Händel’s Baroque opera Julius Caesar, featuring three Estonian countertenors; the conductor for both performances is Vanemuine’s music director Risto Joost. The drama production The End (directed by Marta Aliide Jakovski, who has Latvian roots) will be performed in the newly completed smaller hall of the Dailes Theatre.

According to Vanemuine director Aivar Mäe, this collaboration is a true cultural bridge between Estonia and Latvia: “Traffic moves in both directions on this cultural bridge. We bring guest performances of the Latvian National Opera to Tartu and take Vanemuine’s three genres—ballet, opera, and drama—to Riga. The rail connection between the two cities makes crossing this bridge very easy: audiences can come and go, discover their neighbours’ theatre, and experience top-level productions on both sides of the border.”

Participants in the Press conference included Sandis Voldiņš, General Director of the Latvian National Opera and Ballet; Aivar Mäe, Director of Estonian National Theatre Vanemuine; Music Director Risto Joost; Ballet Director Jevgeni Grib; and Drama Director Tanel Jonas. A musical performance was given by Pirjo Jonas from the opera Julius Caesar, and ballet dancers Selma Strandberg and Vladyslav Kalys performed an excerpt from the production A Little Prayer.
